Princeton University's Navy Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) program was started in 1946 amidst a wave of enthusiasm for the ROTC that followed World War II. It joined the Army ROTC unit on campus, which had operated since 1919, and was followed by the formation of an Air Force ROTC unit in 1951. The Air Force ROTC unit at Oregon State University was established in 1949. The goal of the Apollo Project at Oregon State University was to construct a three-man space simulator and train a crew for a final 48-hour simulated flight. Robert Connell Baldridge, son of H. Malcolm and Regina Baldridge, was born in Omaha, Nebraska on November 9, 1924. Robert was the middle child with one older brother, Malcolm and a younger sister, Letitia. His family remained in Omaha for his entire childhood. Robert was born into a military family. His father was a member of the Yale ROTC and served in both World War I and World War II. His namesake, an uncle, Robert Connell died of pneumonia in World War I.
