Diary, 1855-56 [manuscript]

The diary offers a description of daily events, including bath-taking, heating issues, weather, food, doing lessons, meetings of the Loganian Society, skating, sledding; lectures by Thomas Chase on antiquities of Greece; the literary magazine "Collegian;" decision after Loganian debate that single sex school better (p. 39) and writer agrees; trains stalled in Athensville (Ardmore resulting in some dead livestock; some long entries on governance and a lecture. At the back are a list of moths, 1856; temperatures; signatures of some other students.

William H.S. Wood, son of William and Mary Underhill Wood, entered Haverford College in 1855 and left in 1856. He was a published and partner in the firm of William Wood & Co, president of the Bowery Savings Bank, New York; incorporator of the New York Botanic Garden. He m. Mary Congdon in 1875.
