Anna has been repairing the house. The Canadian papers haven't arrived. Have new mailman. (I think some of their mail has been lost). Problem with a check at the bank. Hopes he is back on S.I. before the snow. Refers to Chicago matters and a settlement.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
