Smith took his Ph. D. in agriculture from Iowa State College in 1938. He served as assistant professor in plant biology at Alabama Polytechnic Institute (now Auburn University), 1931-36, was promoted to associate professor in 1936, served as assistant dean and director of Alabama Agriculture Experiment Station (AES) 1949-51, and Dean of Agriculture / Director of AES 1951-72.
