The papers are composed primarily of correspondence of family members Pat F. Garrett; Polinaria Gutierrez Garrett; Patrick F. Garrett, Jr.; and Poe Garrett. Correspondents include a number of prominent southern New Mexicans. Pat F. Garrett's correspondence concerns topics such as his business interests, and his terms as sheriff of Dona Ana County and as customs collector in El Paso. Legal and financial documents contain materials regarding Garrett's businesses transactions as well as governmental concerns. Included in a series of miscellany are two documents concerning the Fountain murders, and notes related to Garrett's campaign for sheriff of Lincoln County.
