Sends Markham a copy of "Taliesin" at the suggestion of Mrs. Hovey; also sends some plate proofs for Markham to go over; is sorry that he never made it to Boston; heard good things about him from Mr. Traubel and Dr. Platt.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
