Started Nov. 1933, as part of the Federal Program, to provide jobs for the unemployed in Illinois. Originally formed in 1932 as the Illinois Emergency Relief Commission, a charity led by independent Republican businessmen and social workers, it was renamed by Harry Hopkins head of the Federal CWA Program. The Hampton Lillibridge House was built in 1796 by Rhode Island native, Hampton Lillibridge in the traditional New England style. The house was originally located at 310 East Bryan Street in Savannah, Georgia, but when it was purchased by antiques dealer, Jim Williams, in 1963 it was moved to its present location at 507 East Julian Street in Savannah, where it is known as one of Savannah's most haunted homes. Established in 1932 to provide relief to the many people throughout Illinois suffering from effects of the depression. In 1941 was changed to the Illinois Public Aid Commission. The state allocated funds for relief and was later assisted by the federal government. The commission originally consisted of seven men who chose agencies to assist with the relief effort under strict control of the commission.
