Markham is writing to the Soldiers, Patriots and Friend's of the Regimental Family unit. They are on there way to France. He wants them to remember they are fighting for this country. The League will protect and comfort your families here. Don't worry about them. There are many who are behind you. Victory is ahead and you will have a warm welcome home.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
