Markham's secretary explains that he has recieved the telgram and letter that discusses the price of the poems with royalties and music. Markham will except $30.00. She continues that Markham is considered the best known poet in the country. Letter is unsigned.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901).
