James Hope Letters, 1853-1954.

The majority of the letters in this collection were exchanged between James Hope and his wife, Julia, between 1853 and 1872. During the winter Hope lieve in New York City to maintain his art studio while his wife remained in their Castleton, Vt., home. A smaller series of family letters includes Hope's letters to his children, the children's letters to each other, and to their mother between 1864 and the 1880s. Later letters in this series are those of Hope's grandchildren; the most recent of these is 1919. Another series are letters to James Hope from his friends and business associates between 1854 and 1888. Miscellaneous items related to Hope include several invitations to New York City exhibitions and Hope's business card as New York agent for Middletown Healing Spring Water.

James Hope was born in Scotland on November 29, 1818 (or 1819). After the death of his mother, his father immigrated to Canada. Hope's father died in 1831, and James left Canada to apprentice as a wagon-maker in Fair Haven, Vermont. In 1841, he married Julia Marietta Smith (b. December 28, 1820) in West Rutland, Vermont.
