Markham was glad to recieve Mary's letter and high praise for his poem on Poe. He refers to Gill and Ingram's work on Poe. He also wrote for the Cameo edition on poe's work.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899).
