Christopher Burkett photographs, 1995.

Cibachrome photographic prints taken by photographer Christopher Burkett of Christian icons appearing in two 15th century Ethiopic manuscript books of scriptures (MS. Ethiopic 34 and 35) located in the Rubenstein Library of Duke University. The images were painted by two distinct hands, probably copying the images from an original and earlier unidentified source. Themes include a series of scenes from the life of Christ. There is an image of St. George slaying the dragon. There are some marked differences in a few of the images with the same subject matter, indicating an unusual moment of stylistic freedom expressed by the copiers. Collection consists of twenty-five color 8x10 prints reproducing the icons in their actual size and three larger color prints (16x20) of three of the icons. The three larger prints portray the Annunciation to Mary, the Ascension of Christ, and the Mother of God with an infant Christ, flanked by angels.
