Consisting chiefly of materials generated and/or collected by historical preservationist and club woman Sophie Mims (Mrs. Warren Newton) Fair. Bulk of materials relate to unsuccessful efforts in the mid-1930s to secure federal money to establish a Francis W. Pickens National Park encompassing Edgewood plantation. Correspondence to and from the Francis W. Pickens Park Committee, J. Strom Thurmond, chairman, and Sophie M. Fair, secretary, includes letters of Milledge L. Bonham, James F. Byrnes, John Gary Evans, John P. Grace, Butler B. Hare, Harold L. Ickes, Harry A. Slattery, Ellison D. Smith, and John C. Taylor. Other materials relate to Sophie Fair's involvement with the United Daughters of the Confederacy, her work as custodian of Oakley Park, and the Civil War centennial celebration. Includes volume, 1931-1945, treasurer's records, Edgefield Chapter, United Daughters of the Confederacy; roster, Dec. 1942, Co. L, First Regiment, South Carolina Defense Force; address of Rep. John A. May, 12 Oct. 1961, at annual convention of the South Carolina Division, United Daughters of the Confederacy; and undated manuscript, "Edgefield County's Part in the World War." A small number of nineteenth-century manuscripts relates chiefly to Reconstruction politics and the campaign of 1876.
