[Letter] 1889 April 12, Ballena, California [to] [Charles Warren] Stoddard, [Washington, DC] / C.E. Markham. 1889.

Thanks for the letter from Munich and asks to stay in touch; explains to him that he entered the Brotherhood as a blacksmith's aprentice; wa happy but felt that labor should be free not enslaved; his mother was old, so he left Fountain Grove eight years ago; only a few of his works were printed but he plans to set up in Oakland with a library of 2000 volumes and a place to write. Original letter is kept at the Columbia Univ. Librry.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901).
