Asks him for permission to quote from his poetry in his new book; he expects to be called to France and hopes to have the book ready for print before he leaves; apologizes for missquoted phrase but thinks it's the publishers fault;read in his church the poem "There is no time for hate Oh wasteful friend."

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
