Markham was glad to help as a judge for the prize offered to the best sonnet of the sea. He also thanks her for the notice inthe August number of The Poetry Review. He is glad that the Review is doing well. At the bottom of the page of the letter is a note about Markham's home in California.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
