League for the Larger Life wants Markham to speak on OCt. 14thand have Mrs. Marden sing some of Markham's poems; Mrs. Marden is in the hospital at the moment awaiting possible operation; Leage will provide for overnight stay; will host reception in honor of Nona Brooks and Ms. Simon. Plans on an inspirational magazine and wants Markham to have a little send-off poem ready; ome and perhaps read some poems.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
