Account and letter copy book. 1785-1797.

An account book and letter copy book (longhand copies) kept from 1785 to 1797 by William Neil, a large-scale Irish linen manufacturer. Neil recorded, in letter copies, the circumstances of his emigration from Ireland to Portsmouth, New Hampshire--including his complaints with Baron Templetown's agents. He also describes his first year as a shop-keeper in New Hampshire and eight years of his work in linen manufacturing in Ireland. Includes a letter to his former landlord John Henry Upton, Second Baron Templetown of Castle Upton, County Antrim. Neil writes of his long association with 60-80 tenants of the Baron's and the good deeds he had done. He complains that the Baron's agents were not serving him or his mother well. Also contains several letters to his son Thomas Neil and linen manufacturing accounts with over 80 named weavers from October 1785 until September 1795.
