Markham is telling Virgil he is staying at the home of Mabel Wagnalls(who is now Mrs, Richard Jones). He brought his Manuscript "A Star in Water" his next book of poems. He will be staying a while to revise the book. Leonora Mackay is a worker of Markham's . He would like Virgil to take her on some outings because Mr. Mackay is to busy. Let Markham know so he can make arrangements with Leonora. She has help Markham greatly, so he would like to help her.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
