Markham is writing to the Men of the 307th Infantry before they sailed for France. The letter deals with The holy cause of your country and to protect your love ones. Also that everyone here is band together to watch and help your families. Victory is ahead. When you return our hearts will be with pride.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
