Received his letter of January 31 and in reply will say that he cancelled the engagement as rewuested; made arrangements for him to lecture at Mt. Eagle, Tenn; wants to know the outsome of the conference in Philadelphia with Mr. Lorimer in regards to a lecture bureau.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
