Markham was glad to hear that russell run some of the Francis Oppenhmeir paper in "The Forum". It would be a great encouragement to young authors. Markham is waiting for a proof of his works and left a copy of "The Poetry of Jesus."

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
