Straub recieved the letter from Virgil with the request to have Markham write the foreward for the Muse. Virgil also informed Straub that the manuscript on Our Israfel is excellent with the chapter on Poe. Straud needs Markham in Chicago.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
