Collection consists primarily of account books, letterbooks, cash books, and other business and financial records of the Atkins family of Boston and Belmont, Mass., sugar merchants engaged in trade with Cuba, 1845-1950. Includes business and financial records of Elisha Atkins, 1845-1891, Edwin F. Atkins, 1875-1926, and Robert W. Atkins, 1906-1926; and business records of E. Atkins and Co., 1859-1926, and Soledad Sugar Co., a plantation owned by the Atkins family in Cienfuegos, Cuba, 1884-1916. Topics covered in the records include all aspects of the sugar industry; Cuban sugar trade, production, and Black labor; Hawaiian sugar trade; Trinidad Sugar Co., and the Florida Sugar Co.; and sugar tariffs. Also includes records related to Elisha Atkins' tenure as director of the Union Pacific Railroad; and materials relating to damage claims addressed to the Spanish government after the Spanish-American War. Collection includes several scrapbooks compiled by Edwin Farnsworth Atkins containing newspaper clippings on topics related to Cuba, such as the sugar market, the Spanish Treaty, and political issues; and clippings about the Atkins family, 1884-1950. Also includes 16 diaries kept by various members of the Atkins family: Edwin Atkins, 1872, 1888, Helen Atkins, 1872, Katharine W. Atkins, 1913, Mary E.F. Atkins, 1872-1896, Margaret (Rita) Wrisley (sister of Katharine W. Atkins), 1913, and two unidentified Atkins women, 1877, 1890.
