Letters discussing the appraisal value of Abraham Lincoln's life mask and hands which were cast by Leonard W. Volk, 1948. Includes a letter from the appraisal company Paul B. Volk and Son, describing the unique characteristics of the life mask and hands; a letter from the MHS Director Stewart Mitchell describing their provenance; and a typed copy of a letter sent by Truman Howe Bartlett to the editor of the Boston Evening Transcript, March 12, 1917, discussing the sales of similar Lincoln life masks and hands. The mask and hands were donated to the Massachusetts Historical Society in 1948.

Leonard Wells Volk (1828-1895) was an American sculptor. Born November 7, 1828 in Wellstown (now Wells), New York, he was one of twelve children of Garrett and Elizabeth Gesner Volk. At sixteen he began work as a marble cutter in his father's shop in Pittsfield, Massachusetts.
