Drug convocation [sound recording]. 1999.

Convocation address by Dr. Timothy Pennel of Wake Forest University Bowman Gray School of Medicine at the North Carolina School of the Arts. Dr. Pennel discusses common misconceptions about drug use and drug addicts ; the differences between addiction and habituation (physical vs. psychological dependency) ; quotes statistics for addiction vs. habituation with relation to users' ages, cure rates, and time to become addicted ; the state of the drug culture in Winston-Salem in particular and the United States in general. Dr. Pennel also discusses LSD, its history, effects, and the reasons for its use ; he addresses the role of the generation gap in the growth of the drug culture in America. Dr. Pennel also includes a discussion of alcohol, with related statistics and the symptoms of alcoholism. The 2nd part of the address is a question and answer session; topics include: cure rates and the nature of alcoholism ; legal consequences for narcotics possession/use ; statistics on the users of marijuana who do not progress to narcotics use ; the attitudes of society towards alcoholics and addicts ; tobacco ; out-of-body experiences of LSD users ; comparison of drug use in other countries with use in the United States ; the role of drug use in artistic creativity ; definition of 'cure' ; and a description of the withdrawal process.
