Gutierrez has taught piano for much of her life, played professionally, and was active in the Houston music scene. Oliveros, whom Gutierrez had with her first husband, J.B. Oliveros III, is an internationally known composer and accordionist. In 1952, at the age of 20, Pauline moved from Houston to San Francisco.
