Harriet wpold love to come to Staten Island for the summer to write. She was having problems with her apartment. Myra Kelly is selling her piano and Mrs.J. I. C. Clarke is helping with this. She would like to come to S.I.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
