His framed poems where presented to "The Cheshire Cheese" with much appreciation; seat at the table of the great Ben Johnson and regretted that Mr. M. was not there. Written on the stationary of "The Poetry Review."

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
