Jesse A. Applegate collection, 1861-1934.

Two letters, a photograph, and a copy of Recollections of my boyhood. One letter by Applegate, dated July 24, 1861, is addressed to his cousin John T. Miller asking for news from the "old home." The second letter, dated May 15, 1934, from Jesse's brother, Oliver C. Applegate, to historian John Thomas Lee of Chicago, discusses a new edition of Jesse's Recollections being prepared for publication. The photograph has the caption "Jesse A. Applegate in old age." Recollections of my boyhood is Applegate's published memoirs about coming to Oregon on the Oregon Trail in 1843 and his early years there.
