The letter was written by Samuel's secretary Miss C.N. Maltry. She wanted to send a picture of him to Mr. M. Samuel died on Dec. 24 1915. She would like a copy of "California the Wonderful"with Mr. M's Signature. Mrs. D.S. Snograss is a very dear friend of mine and she knows Mrs M., she give you information on me.(Maltry).

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
