Francis Tufts orderly books, 1777-1783.

Six regimental orderly books kept by adjutant Francis Tufts, lieutenant for Col. Michael Jackson's Regiment of the Continental Army, 5 Sept.- 4 Dec. 1777 and 30 April- 18 May 1778; later the 8th Mass. Regiment, Continental Army 13 Sept. 1779- 31 Jan. 1780, 1 June- 9 Aug. 1780, 30 May- 19 July 1782, and 9 Dec. 1783- 5 Jan. 1783. The records for Michael Jackson's Regiment were kept at Saratoga, N.Y., during Horatio Gates's Saratoga campaign, and Valley Forge, Pa., and concern muster rolls, pension programs, care of the sick, and appointments of brigade inspectors, among other orders. The records for the 8th Mass. Regiment were kept at West Point, Tappan, and Newburgh, N.Y., and concern orders from Washington's headquarters, winter furloughs, army inspections, fortifications around West Point, and duty rosters, among other orders.

In response to the expansion of the Continental Army the number of staff was increased and reorganized in 1776. Changes included the creation of a new unit to supplement George Washington's personal staff. This special unit, the Commander in Chief's Guard, was formed on March 12, 1776 with Captain Caleb Gibbs (formerly adjutant of the 14th Continental Regiment and appointed Aid to Major General Greene) as commander.
