Samuel noticed Markhams work in the Literary Digest on "The Real Anerica in Romance". He has sent Markham a copy of a letter from his brother from Lakeport about the Old Black School House.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
