This collection contains biographical materials, correspondence, photographs, sketches, printed materials including exhibit brochures and newspaper clippings, and artifacts. The majority of correspondence dates from the 1930s and consists of Petersen's communications with his colleagues. A series of photographs comprises a large part of the collection, documenting Petersen's work.

Petersen was a Danish-born sculptor-in-residence and professor of art (1934-1955) at Iowa State University. From the description of Papers, 1918-1961. (Iowa State University).
