California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...

Burton, Richard, 1861-1940

Richard E. Burton was an editor, author, and educator. He was born in Connecticut and educated at Trinity College and Johns Hopkins. He was literary editor of the Hartford Courant for several years before accepting a position at the University of Minnesota as English professor and department head.
