Writes that he works for the Lothrop Publishing Company; would be more than happy to have lunch at the Player's Club when he comes to New York later in October; says that his company never published anything of Elizabeth Peabody; his own first volume "Literary likings" was published by Small, Maybard & Co.; sends him his latest book "Forces in Fiction" and ask to send him his latest volume; loves his publisher and asks Markham if he could publish something from him.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). Richard E. Burton was an editor, author, and educator. He was born in Connecticut and educated at Trinity College and Johns Hopkins. He was literary editor of the Hartford Courant for several years before accepting a position at the University of Minnesota as English professor and department head.
