In 1839 Moses W. Dodd purchased an interest in a New York publishing firm established by John S. Taylor. The following year he severed his connection with Taylor and continued alone until his retirement in 1870. He was succeeded by his son, Frank H. Dodd, who, with his cousin Edward S. California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901).
