Norn in Troy, N.Y., Vanderburg joined the Continental Army at 16 and reached the rank of captain. He came to Vinvennes, Ind. in 1790 and the following year was appointed justice of the peace and probate judge. He served as a member of the supreme court of the Indiana Territory from 1800 to 1821.
