This is a lenghty letter dicussing returning home after meeting Mr. M. Leonard continues about his book "Lucifer" and his translation of Vondel's "Samson". He dicusses poetry and Emerson. He continues dicussing Mr, M's work, "Man with the Hoe'and that "A Look into the Gulf", was the finest poem ever written and discusess it. He makes refer to about 90 different poems of Markhams'. Sending Markham a copy of "Samson" Act V.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
