Rose wants Mr. M to write an autograph inscription in his book "Lincoln". She wants to know if she buys her own copy of "California" will he autograph it and say something intimiate. She recieved a letter today from Mrs. Wilcox, still sad and lonely.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
