Benjamin is getting a symposium for the Arena on Prof. Stimson's book and some opinions. Benjamin has been pressed for time and unable to write. He is interested in the Prof. book and ordered Mr. Brandt to send you one. I would like your opinion. Prof Raymond of Princeton Uni sent an excellent criticism. Joaquin Miller and Rev R. Heber Newton will be sending something in early July. I need your writting my July 8th.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
