Benjamin Wrote telling Edwin that the Literary Digest reproduced his poem on the Coming of Lincoln in full. He wanted to know if Edwin would object to incorporating it into the Arena and giving him and the American the credit.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
