Benjamin tells Edwin that there are no list of names. He forwarded his letter to Mr. Brandt and to Mr. Wheeler to send the advanced copies of the August Arena with your article. Your picture has been made into a plate and it is a good one. July copy of the Arena will carry double the reading matter.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
