Collection consists of a volume of diaries and a letterbook kept by Gideon Hawley who worked as a missionary preacher with the Mashpee Indians on Cape Cod, Mass. The diaries were kept from 12 Apr. 1757- 15 Mar. 1769, and note Hawley's visits, travel, work in Mashpee, and include comments on public affairs. The handsewn letterbook was kept, 1784-1804, and records outgoing letters written by Hawley mostly to the Mass. General Court which describe the living conditions of the Mashpee Indians.
