The collection contains photographs, manuscript material, and ephemera made and collected by the Goldthwaite family of Marion, Indiana. The materials are related to the military careers and personal activities of Harry Goldthwaite and his cousin John Louis Goldthwaite. An album belonging to Harry Goldthwaite includes sixty-three photographs of officers, crew members while aboard the U.S.S. Olympia between 1897 and 1899. Many of these photographs were made by Frances Benjamin Johnston who photographed the crew of the Olympia while the ship was docked in Naples, Italy in August 1899. In addition to the Johnston photographs, Harry Goldthwaite's album also contains snapshots that document his journey by truck from Marion, Indiana to San Francisco in 1919, to draw attention to the need for better roads and to promote the Indiana Truck Corporation. An illustrated brochure also describes the journey. The John Louis Goldthwaite material consists of photographs and negatives from his service in the army during World War I, including an album of snapshots of soldiers training at Fort Benjamin Harrison, ca. 1917.
