Glad that the house matter worked out. Miss. (mrs) Jewell's concert was on the card for Monday or Tuesday. I will tell her you had good intensions. Mrs. Rooney thought that your Poe poem was fine. Reguards to Mrs. Markham and Vigil.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
