Andrew J. Taft family papers, 1862-1902.

The collection consists of letters written by Andrew J. Taft to his family in Whitehall, New York while he was a soldier. His company was in Loudon Valley (VA), Stafford Court House (VA), Catlett's Station (VA), Kelley's Ford (VA), and Atlanta (GA). His regiment was first to enter Atlanta, and Taft describes fortifications around the city, the houses with bullet holes, and foraging expeditions after the battle. The letters discuss details of battles, officers, fellow soldiers, and camp life. There are also letters from his brother, Hiram Taft, Jr., usually added to Andrew's letter, and other family members including Henry Taft. An 1899 letter indicates that Andrew Taft is the tax collector in Whitehall. Also included in the collection are a carte de visite of Andrew Taft in his uniform, his watch fob, and 2 ribbons from the veterans organization Grand Army of the Republic (GAR).
