Personal and family correspondence relating to the family of Thomas Jackson Lowe (1916-1976), his wife, Rose Walker Mayne Lowe (1916-1994), and their daughter, Harriet Rose Lowe (b. 1942), as well as their extended family: Rose Walker Mayne Lowe's mother, Rosa Montgomery Walker Mayne (1874-1947), her aunt Stella Walker Salisbury (1881-1975), and her half-sister Harriet Emily Mayne Cooke (1901-1953). Other materials relate to the education of Harriet Rose Lowe, a cerebral palsy patient, who attended special schools for the physically handicapped in Columbia, S.C., and Jamestown, N.D., and subsequently earned baccalaureate and graduate degrees from the University of South Carolina. Topical files relate to the professional careers of Thomas Jackson Lowe and Rose Walker Mayne Lowe and their involvement in civic and fraternal organizations. Thomas Lowe, an educator and coach, was associated with the South Carolina Education Association and served as executive director of the South Carolina Association of School Boards, Inc. He was instrumental in organizing the Governor's Conference on Business, Education, Industry and Agriculture. Rose Lowe was executive director of the Easter Seal Society for the Crippled Children and Adults of South Carolina, Inc. Through her efforts, South Carolina became the first state to require that public buildings constructed with state, county, or municipal funds be fully accessible to the physically handicapped. Genealogical files relate to the Lowe and related Battle, Walker, Wilbourne, Stovall, and Mayne families; In addition to family photographs, the papers contain images of Easter Seal Society functions, Easter Seal family camps, the South Carolina Association of School Boards, Inc., and various elected officials and dignitaries.
