Indian subgroup, 1956-1995 (bulk 1956-1968).

The Indian subgroup contains correspondence, speeches, reports, government publications, and manuscripts chiefly relating to Officer's work with the Bureau of Indian Affairs and with Secretary of the Interior Stewart Udall. There are memos, daily reports and correspondence between Officer and Udall as well as material on various projects. Additional material relates to the Inter-American Indian Institute, an international organization concerned with solving problems of indigenous populations. There are materials about the B.I.A., about federal Indian policy, and about specific issues affecting American Indians. These include land and irrigation issues of the Colorado River Indian tribes, and issues of the Fort McDowell Mohave-Apache and Salt River Gila-Maricopa communities mostly related to the proposed Orme Dam. There are also articles and reports about the Pima Indians and reports and demographics relating to a 1969 drought on the Tohono O'odham Indian Reservation. Also present are materials relating to the Quinault Reservation, education, the Indian Claims Commission, and the Rufus Review Panel's nuclear weapons test site evaluations in Alaska.
