The Bessie Lewis Collection consists of the files, research and biographical information that Lewis accumulated during her lifetime. The collection contains both primary and secondary documents. Lewis is best known for her historical research and writing, that research is the backbone of the Bessie Lewis Collection. The original order of this collection was maintained. Files and file names were retained as created and named by Lewis. The visual materials series contains photographs, photograph albums, and other mediums. The material in the first box is mostly snapshots, family photographs, etc. In the second box, there are images that correlate to Lewis' research, both general and genealogical. There is also artwork by people such as Acee Blue Eagle and Mildred Huie (mostly published works, only a few originals). The dates of images range from ca. 1850-1975, the earliest are the family images. Most of the photographs are black and white, however, there are a few color images as well as an ambrotype (Box 1), and tintypes in the photo album. The boxes and volumes containing visual materials have been noted as "VM" in the collection inventory.
